Today we commemorate the 6th anniversary of the most catastrophic natural disaster to befall Haiti. The devastation in the hours, days and months following the earthquake was unparalleled. Yet, astoundingly the Haitian people have persevered. The earthquake gave way to a wave of humanitarian efforts and sparked the birth of the Health Education Action League for Haiti (HEAL Haiti).
In 2015, HEAL Haiti has made significant strides towards our mission of training and mobilizing young leaders through health and science education programs. Our 3rd Annual Health Fair & Mobile Clinic reached over 700 adults and children in need of health screenings, education and medication. In October, our inaugural Fundraising Gala was hosted by media personality and renowned Haitian-American, Dr. Jeffrey Gardere. The Gala entitled, Honoring Notable Health Care Professionals Impacting Lives in Haiti, acknowledge the inspiring work of ten dynamic individuals in the fields of internal medicine, nursing, gastroenterology, anesthesiology, pulmonary medicine, pediatric hematology and oncology, public health and dentistry.
As we look forward to the year ahead, HEAL Haiti is planning its 4th Annual Health Fair. We are also partnering with more local agencies in Haiti and deepening our networks. HEAL Haiti is now providing scholarships to nursing students and mentoring graduate nurses in Haiti. Today, we not only mourn the loss of hundreds of thousands of Haitian lives but celebrate the strength and resilience of the Haitian people.
To our board members, volunteers, friends and supporters, thank you again for helping HEAL Haiti improve the health conditions of so many affected by the earthquake.
